MySpace or Urine....
(I don't know why I said that, except that it's the kind of pun my Dad used to love. Happy Birthday, Dad)
The MySpace part of it is in reference to the new "online" icon that Xanga is using. I hated the Big Brotherliness of it on MS, and I'm not warming up to it here, either.
Don't get me wrong - - I got nothin' to hide. My doors are always unlocked, and I keep cash in an end table drawer. I couldn't live in a place where I didn't feel perfectly safe doing this. All the rotten things that have happened in my life have had nothing to do with locked doors or money.
At first, when I saw it next to my name, I thought that maybe they'd come up with a new icon for we "False" xangans. (I still haven't figured out what it's supposed to depict?). Then I started hunting around to see who else had one. I realize now, that since it was one a.m., there weren't too many others actually online. The only ones I found were Zimbo and CD. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out what I was doing in such stellar company - icon-wise.
My biggest problem with this little gnat-y thinger, is me...and I realise this. You see, in Moe's little world, Xanga is a bunch of friend's having sometimes goofy (xoofy ?), sometimes meaningful, sometime supportive, sometimes "my-aren't you-a-nincompoop", conversations amongst themselves. I have completely sublimated the fact that this is a business, and the 'corporation' sees all and knows all and will use all, to their business advantage. As a business, I suppose they probably should change and grow. But, do they have to annoy me in the process ? I think not !!
AHA ! You can go to your 'Account Info - Privacy' section and opt out. So, back to anonymous xanga-ing. See you later.

lol. It doesn't bother me much... partly because I am the same kind of trusting person. I just ignore the changes mostly. How's life treating you?
I love your quirky sense of humor here and the fact that you gave me random credits

I also love that you love Ocean and Oxymeorphous (I may have gotten that right?) too
But best of all is your profile picture. Mahvelous.
Thank you!
the second I saw that dumb thing I was annoyed. I leave my laptop on all day, and it annoys me that if I kept my xanga page up all day that thing would be up all day. doesn't make sense to me. I immediately turned the sucker off.
I dont like myspace.......for the most part. I have one only for a few reasons......One because I have neices and the other because I have a friend on there and cant talk to him otherwise.......
I dont like like anonomous browsing cause I have found some of my stuff like personal pictures floating around as others stuff......No thanks.
Other than that everything I talk about is up for everyone to read......No biggie.
I opted out immediately, not that I have a reason for people to know or not know when I'm online just the big brotherness of it creeped me out. It annoys me that I had to opt out after being left out of the huge true clique but apparently so many people were clamoring for this little feature that we are in a definite minority. So I am not a "true" xangan but I am a hidden one now.
Ah, yes, back to the Orwellian paranoia of old...or of late. Whatever. I personally thrive on the attitude of open and honest defiance. And this perhaps isolates me from more than I would like. The truely paranoid sometimes read my blasts at the establishment and drop their subscriptions quickly, fearful that affiliation will somehow draw them into the target zone. Such is life.
The fact of the matter is that, no matter how you attempt to disguise your identity or your movements, you are under some sort of surveiliance about 16 hours a day, more or less, and quite probably more if you are on the net. Privacy, then, becomes a matter of what you decide to share and with whom you choose to share it.
Is there any consolation? Of course. If they care enough to listen, you must have hit a nerve.

ryc: I agree...women have fought some of the hardest battles in history just to be able to stand and be counted. In other countries, International Women's Day is a huge holiday...apparently in Cuba, men will say to any women they see that day, "Congratualations". It's the lack of counting going on in this country that bothers me.
I don't care much one way or the other about the online status, but I see your point.
thumbs up to your post up there!
i've been meaning to ask, are girl scout cookies made here in the USA or china? just a thought.
Personally, I don't care one way or the other if people know I'm online. Generally I don't leave my xanga page up for long periods of time and if I see one of my subs or friends online at least then I'll know I might get a quick reply if I message them. But really, for me, it's no big hairy deal. It is rather myspaceish thought isn't it?
So thats what it is! i opened a my space once, and hated right away, for a start i find it too difficult to use, (maybe thats just me) and getting a " xxx wants to be friends with you" message and knowing its one of the myspace team , i'm happy with the way xanga works for the moment, bt they do keep changing it, the new private page had me totally confused for a while, and forget useing "skins" i'm wondering when they will launch xanga chat lol!
Excellent post.
I only ever tried blogspot other than xanga, it was a lonely experience. Fortunately all the extras are optoutableof, I didn't like the true tag myself. Can't see the point of the online light bulb really. Stellar company?rotfl!
I'll have to go back and re-read your breating advice then come back, I'm doing replies mainly today i hope.
